What Are The Symptoms of Infant Acid Reflux

admin on Nov-22-2009

Medical conditions strike often without regard to age, gender, or nationality. Young and old alike often suffer from the same ailments. Acid reflux disease, medically termed Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) seems to be one of those holds no discrimination for age. The lower end of the esophagus is protected by a flap or valve that is referred to as the Lower Esophageal Sphincter (LES). This valve opens in order to allow food to flow from the esophagus into the stomach. It should then close in order to keep the stomach acids from ‘boiling over’ into the lining of the esophagus.

There are several conditions that hinder the valve from operating properly and allow the contents of the stomach to enter the esophagus. Very much like adults, infants occasionally suffer from the pains of heartburn. In infants, heartburn is often the result of their essentially liquid diets that are high in dairy proteins. The sad things for the little ones is that unlike adults, they can’t exactly tell you they have heartburn so GERD isn’t exactly easy to diagnose.

Infant GERD is often the combination of many factors than the sole responsibility of one indicator. Most of the factors that would contribute to acid reflux are aggravated because infants spend much of their days lying down in addition to the fact that their diets are almost entirely liquid. There are however, physical reasons that infants much sometimes endure the suffering that this brings about. These could be any of the following: improper or incomplete development of the lower esophageal sphincter while developing, food allergies, poor diet, and being overweight. There are other factors but these are some of the most common.

Since infants can’t complain about their symptoms like adults can, it is important to watch for certain clues that may indicate a problem. If you notice any of the following symptoms, it is wise to consult your pediatrician and have a closer examination: trouble sleeping, weight loss, frequently spitting up, coughing, excessive crying, an apparent sore throat or chest pain, bad breath, and unusual crankiness.

GERD can also cause respiratory problems such as pneumonia, malnourishment, and strictures or ulcerations on the esophageal wall. These signs may or may not indicate GERD but definitely warrant a visit to your pediatrician.

Keeping your child upright for a good portion of the day, particularly after feeding is one of the best things you can do for him or her in order to minimize the risk of acid reflux, also be sure to watch for signs of chest pain and any of the other symptoms listed above. Prevention is always the best cure, but if you notice symptoms, see a doctor immediately.

Infant acid reflux 1week old baby need help please!!!!!!!!!?
My daughter has acxid reflux well i think she does because she has almost all the symptoms of it, im going to the doc today but i want to know from other people what i can do to help her get though this problem. She was up last night for 5 hours straight i thought i was going to go mad. Now what makes me belive she has acid reflux are theses reasons.
she arches her back when feeding she coughs, hiccups, gags sometimes refuses feeding and sometimes eats small amounts, she is fussy when feeding, she will vomit sometimes as well after a feeding, she will spit up during of after a feeding, she has wet burps, poor sleeping habits, and she has colic like symptoms, thoose are all symptoms of infant acids reflux. so my question is before i go to the doc i want to know from people with exsperience of having a infant with acid reflux what is the best meds or remidies that work for my 1 week old baby, i’ve used gripe water it works a bit but not good enough please help i dont know what to do

  2. *x*Zoe*x* Said,

Gripe water shouldnt be used if your baby is under a month old, but infacol is quite good, and can be used from birth!

<edit> infacol isnt absorbed into the body and has no medication in it so it is completely safe for a newborn

I went through this same thing — I thought my baby had acid reflux, I read the list of symptoms, etc., but after some research I realized that all babies have these symptoms, to some extent. Go talk to your doctor, but at 1 week old I would not be so quick to put her on medication. A lot of this is stuff that they just outgrow with a little bit of time.

My baby had a severe form of acid reflux know as GERD Gastrol Esophical Reflux Diseas this means the the spinchter valve in the throught ( what helps to keep food down) is not all the way mature take your babay to the doctor and discuss this with him also i had to quit breast feeding because the milk was too thin for my baby to keep down i switched to a formula called infamil AR it has rice starch in it so its thicker which helps baby keep it down also i would suggest using recieving blankets as burp rags this is what i had to do my docor also put my daughter on a medicine that helped too i know its disgusting and stresssful but baby will grow out of it good luck but i would not do anything including switching formula untill you takl to your doctor and remeber to ask about GERD GOODLUCK

my baby had reflux that started at around a week. we waiting until his 2 week appointment so that we could ask the doctor about it. it was really bad. he wouldn’t sleep, he would always cry and arch his back, he would spit up and sometimes throw up, etc. i could tell it really bothered him.

he needed Prevacid one dose a day. he also was put on Enfamil AR Lipil to help his food stay down. both were helpful, but of course with a baby with reflux, it doesn’t make all the symptoms go away. it just helps with pain.

it lasted all the way to 8 months. he is now 10 months and he does spit up occasionally but not more than any other baby. he is on regular formula and off prevacid. the worst is in the past.

it is hard to deal with it. if your baby does have reflux she will spit up constantly. make sure you keep lots of bibs and burp cloths handy. keep her upright as much as possible even if it means holding her. sometimes i would let my baby sleep on my shoulder while i was sitting. get reflux wedges for the crib for her to sleep. really the only you can do is offer comfort.

My baby had acid reflux from the beginning too. He was changed to alimentum formula by similac and that helped for awhile. The biggest help was getting the Dr. Brown’s bottles. They cost a lot but they are well worth it in the long run. My baby is now on the Lactose free milk too and he is like a different baby. Just experiment and see what works. Buy one bottle and get free samples of formula at the doctors and experiment. Just remenber it takes about 4-5 days to see a difference because of the formula so don’t give up one formula too soon. The other formula has to be got rid in your babies system.
