Is white baby bedding a bad idea?

admin on Sep-1-2010

Is white an ok color for baby bedding or are colored sheets/blankets best?

of course, if your worried about spit up stains then I suggest laying receiving blankets down right where the baby sleeps, so if anything leaks (hah), you just have to pick up the small receiving blankey and throw it in the wash instead of the entire sheet set . white works when you use my technique:-)

good luck

Is there any point to buying all that baby bedding?

admin on Aug-31-2010

I’ve heard that the regular crib bumpers aren’t necessarily good if baby were to put it’s face against it and have a hard time breathing, as well as those big and bulky crib comforters that come in sets being too much material for the baby. If this is correct, wouldn’t it make more sense to just buy a breathable crib bumper and maybe a blanket the weight of a receiving blanket and some sleepers? And of course sheets as well. But how many sheets should I buy?

I only used sheets and sleepers for my daughter for the longest time! You don’t need all that junk right away, especially since most people will tell you it’s dangerous anyways. I got bumper pads only recently for my daughter since she pokes her arms and legs through the crib bars and gets caught ALL THE TIME, but she is old enough and strong enough to turn away from the corners. I also keep a blanket underneath her now, but it is tucked in so that she doesn’t get tangled in it.

How much would you pay for baby bedding?

admin on Aug-29-2010

I have a brand new 4 piece baby girl crib bedding set. I purchased it for 190.00, I know I won’t get that much for it, I’m just hung on how much I should sell it for.

Thanks
Yes it is unused. Still in package!

Depends who makes it, what it looks like, etc. I paid over $600 for my bedding, but it was perfect and I don’t regret it. If your bedding was absolutely exactly what I was looking for, and I couldn’t find it anywhere else, I’d pay you full price. If it’s common, Babies R’ Us crap, I’d probably be willing to spend about 1/2 of retail.

Pet Travel and Recreation – Camping With Pets

admin on Aug-7-2010

Camping with your pet brings the whole family together to enjoy the experience instead of leaving the four-footed member of the family behind to worry about.

It’s no fun to be cooped up in a kennel for a weekend or longer when the rest of the family is out having a good time. If your pet is physically able, well behaved and eager to go, wouldn’t it be nice to take him along for the trip?

Just as you would pack what items to bring along for you, don’t overlook what your pet may need to keep him comfortable too. Being prepared with the right essentials and equipment is the key to ensure a happy time on the road and in the woods. Keep in mind also of when and where you plan to camp. The time of year and geographical location of your campsite can make a big difference in how and what you prepare for your camping trip. Know what the weather conditions are likely to be and pack accordingly.

Consider these tips to make your camping experience with your pet more enjoyable:

* Check out the campgrounds, parks or wherever you plan to visit well in advance to make sure they accept pet campers. You can search Pet-Friendly Attractions on PetTravelCenter.com for these.

* Find out what types of facilities they have on site, such as dog runs, off-leash areas, drinking water, etc.

* Do they allow off-leash pets on nearby hiking trails?

*Is there a size restriction or a limit in the number of pets you can bring along?

Don’t forget about your pet’s safety in getting him to your destination either.

* Invest in a vehicle pet harness, seat belt or car seat (for smaller pets) to protect him (and you) in case you have to make a sudden stop or become involved in an accident. Unrestrained pets become deadly projectiles to other passengers. For example, did you know that an unsecured, 25-pound dog in a 40 mph crash becomes a 1,000-pound mass (half a ton) flying uncontrollably inside the vehicle?

* Never attach a restraining device to the pet’s collar inside a vehicle that could choke him or break his neck in a collision. A harness will help to prevent injury.

As you plan your trip, here are some items for your pet that may help make his (and your) camping experience more enjoyable:

* Pet tent and bedding. Who doesn’t like his own digs? A small, easily assembled pet tent gives everyone a better night’s sleep. A pet travel bed or cot keeps your pet off the ground and away from crawling bugs.

* Pet first-aid kit. An essential item to pack and should contain such things as antiseptic cream, assorted bandages, tweezers, eye drops, gauge, tape, and the like. Know what items are in your kit and how to use them. Phone numbers for your pet’s vet, the National Animal Poison Control Center hotline (888-426-4435), and emergency pet hospitals in the areas where you plan to travel should be taken along. Visit Emergency Tips at PetTravelCenter.com for more information.

* Travel tag. A travel tag on a pet’s collar or harness will help someone locate you locally should you and your pet become separated. The travel tag should contain information about where you are staying locally (while away from home), including addresses and phone numbers. A cell phone number is also a good idea since nowadays most people have one with them when they travel anywhere. Be sure to pack an updated photo of your pet that will also help identify him to others.

* Treats, food and water. Pack the appropriate amount of food and water for your pet (and you!). New innovations in pet travel products make it easy to take along portable or collapsible food and water bowls, pet backpacks that even have their own water supply.

Here are a few other essentials that you should consider for your pet:

* Protective dog shoes. For hiking in rough terrain or to protect from ice forming between toes in cold weather.

* Toys. A familiar chew toy is like a baby blanket and reinforcement to your pet. You may want to include two or three for a little variety or in case one becomes lost or your pet decides to hide one.

* Grooming supplies. Burs, beggar’s lice, hound’s-tongue… there are lots of names for all of those hijackers that get on pets and one’s clothing while in the woods. It’s advisable to have the right kind of brush to get those pesky things off your pet’s coat. Additionally, in case your pet gets into something he shouldn’t that may require a bath, some pet shampoo with you may do the trick. Pack some extra towels for drying or wiping muddy feet.

* Leash and harness. You should always have a means of controlling your pet when you travel. Some animals get very anxious when they’re in new territory and can become scared and run away or excited and want to explore. Be courteous of others in the campground, park or on the trail so they are not unnerved by a pet on the loose. Remember to check the leash regulations where you plan to romp with your pet before setting out. Wildlife such as snakes, skunks, porcupines, raccoons, bears, mountain lions, and coyotes can be a problem with a pet on the loose and can cause serious injury. Make sure your pet stays in close proximity to where you are hiking.

* Flea and tick repellant. Some products last several weeks to kill adult fleas (and larvae), ticks and mosquitoes. Consider treating your pet, according to the manufacturer’s directions, to make his camping experience more enjoyable.

How to Care for a Hamster

admin on Aug-6-2010

As a child, most of us grew up with hamsters or friends who had hamsters. Even our children are fascinated with the small fuzzy creatures. There are many types of hamsters, dwarf, Syrian, Russian, Chinese, and hybrid. The hamster is a burrower so they prefer to have lots of bedding to hide under as well as tubes to create little nests in. The most difficult aspect of hamsters is telling if they are female or male and being wrong. Who has bought two hamsters thinking they were the same gender and ending up with ten hamsters? I certainly have.

A lot of biologists and geneticists use hamsters and other rodents to show genetic possibilities. In genetics, we often discuss the genome and how genes are dispersed in relation to eye color, hair color, and other traits. When you have hamsters as pets you are seeing this first hand. I had one gold hamster and one white hamster. When they bred I ended up with several color traits from gold, white, black, white and black to many more. Half the fun for kids is seeing the baby hamsters grow up with different colors. It can be a great science project for school as well as having a wonderful pet.

Hamsters are relatively easy to take care of. You can feed them hamster food, vegetables, and little hamster treats to give them a good life. The bedding should be changed weekly or twice a week depending upon how many hamsters you have. The downside to hamsters is their short lives. Most live only a year or two making it difficult on the younger children.

There are lots of hamster accessories from tubes to wheels. Hamsters like other pets need to have exercise so giving them wheels to run on or having a hamster ball to run around the house in is good for them. The tubing and cages come in a variety of colors to add to a child’s fun. You can create straight pathways to other larger home areas or curve them around to reenter the same cage. Most of the caging is plastic and your hamster will try to chew or claw there way free. You will want to monitor their activity when you clean the cage to make sure they are not producing a hole. Some hamster owners go with a metal wire cage with tiny slits to avoid the chewing escape. Your preference will determine the type of accessories you purchase.

Handling hamsters should be kept to a minimum and you should always wash your hand before and after. Hamsters can have a tendency to bite if they are not handled at least once a day or if they become scared. Be cautious with little children.

Hamsters are a lot of fun for all ages whether you have a budding scientist or just want an easy pet your child can care for. You will want to make sure you feed your hamster properly by not over feeding them while maintaining proper exercise. When your hamsters procreate, you will want to separate out the mother and children from the rest of the crew. A cautionary note before concluding this article: Dwarf hamsters are very susceptible to infections with cedar chips because it can tear holes in their tiny mouths.

Decorating Styles For A Nursery

admin on Aug-3-2010

Planning on a decorating scheme for your nursery. What kind of furniture and accents to get. How to get the best furniture.

Decorating a nursery is both fun and frustrating. You want the perfect room for your baby, but how much can you afford to spend? There are so many things for the young parents-to-be to buy, such as furniture, bedding, lamps, wall decorations and curtains. The most important item is the baby furniture, and the largest part of the budget should be devoted to those items. Even if you are buying most items at discount to save money, make sure the crib is good quality and safe.

Scour garage sales or ask relatives and friends for decorating items. You may find a crib at a second hand store, but make sure it is sturdy and safe. A new crib is a safer bet, and you can find bargains at stores such as Walmart, or on line at sites such as http://overstock.com. You can usually find good bargains there. Graco, Century and Bassett baby furniture are usually higher priced, but if you shop their outlets, you can get good bargains. They often offer decorating ideas as well.

Baby Dream Furniture is an ideal choice for baby furniture on a budget. Their three hundred national stores offer a wide choice of good quality, reasonably priced furniture. If your budget is more liberal, you may want to consider Pali furniture. Classic and elegant baby furniture is available from this Italian manufacturer, but you may have to go on line to find a retailer near you. The Pali line specializes in classic designs such as Jenny Lind, which is very popular, but many other beautiful styles are available for a charming nursery.

Another popular brand for baby furniture is Delta. This line is known for combining good quality with practical form and function. Their products, which include bassinets, cribs, changing tables, toddler beds and carriages are meant to last years and years. Other good quality items that many parents like are the glider rockers, chairs and tables from the Jardine Baby Furniture company. They are value-priced, making them very popular.

After the important items such as furniture are chosen, you can start to pick the decorating items to coordinate with the furniture. Pick the basics such as crib, chest, changing table and a chair or rocker for mom and then you’ll know what kind of bedding and accent pieces will go with them.

Can anyone recommend good websites for baby bedding?

admin on Jul-15-2010

I am in search of some good websites for baby and crib bedding. Can any one recommend it?

Ebay has a ton! And there are sellers that sell all of the matching accessories to go with them.
I bought our bedding from Babies R Us and then bought the other stuff on ebay, like nursery letters, etc.

I want steamboat willie baby bedding but i cant find any does anyone know how i can get a custom made set?

admin on Jun-5-2010

all the web sites that i have found that make custom baby bedding sets only let you choose from a set of fabric designs and i dont know where else to look any help would be appreciated thanks

make it yourself or get a private job done. I know that you are probably not going to find fabric for that but this will make it easier
1. find an image online that you would like copied
2. get a plain fabric (maybe something that looks vintage to match the look you want)
3. sew your fabric to the types of bedding you want
4. print image on an iron-on transfer paper that you can find in most walmarts
5. iron on
you will probably want most of the fabric plain or maybe something with dots or stripes on it for any bumper pads or sheets, but for the quilt and if you want a crib caddy, or perhaps a wall hanging just find some neat pictures and match with different sizes.
Good luck!

oh and if you just meet someone who can sew they will prob just do it for you if you ask, or for the right price.
